Get What you Really Want: Massage vs. Bodywork

Because it is important...

The definition of massage according to Mosby’s Dictionary of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (c) 2005, Elsevier is: the application of diverse manual techniques of touch and stroking to muscles and soft tissue to achieve relaxation and to improve the client’s well-being. In other words, the primary function of massage is to promote relaxation. Bodywork, on the other hand, is defined in two ways by the same source. First, it is defined as a collection of techniques for restoring health and balance to the entire person by working with the body. Secondly, it is defined as applying any number and combination of the therapeutic touch paradigms that have been developed. To once again paraphrase, bodywork is the application of one or more systematized methods of manipulating the body to promote health.

Why this emphasis on definitions? Because it is important to get what you want. If you are looking for a comforting experience that leaves you relaxed then massage is what you should be seeking. However, if you are experiencing pain, whether chronic or acute, or are looking to improve your function, then it is Bodywork to which you should turn. Here at OPTIMAL HEALTH Clinic & OPTIMAL HEALTH School of Bodywork Integration, we are proud to provide a system of Manual Therapy that we refer to as “Total Body Integration”. We have integrated some of the most effective Soft Tissue Principle & Evidence-Informed Functional Assessments, and Treatment Strategies to create a new paradigm for restoring the body to balance and health and thereby eliminate pain and improve posture and function. Now here is the real secret: By restoring the body to balance an incredibly deep sense of relaxation occurs that often lasts far longer than from a therapeutic massage alone. In effect, by receiving a Bodywork Treatment session at OPTIMAL HEALTH Clinic or OPTIMAL HEALTH School of Bodywork Integration, you are getting the best of both worlds and, nothing could be better than that!

  • An absolutely fantastic experience! I would rate this as one of the best massage experiences I’ve ever had. And I’ve been getting massages regularly for 15 years now. Steven was prompt, courteous, and professional. He projected a quiet confidence. And his intuition and skill in applying Thai massage techniques was superlative; he is a master of his craft!

The facial manipulation, pressure, joint mobilization and support during passive range of motion stretches were well informed, gentle, relaxing, and yet stimulating. My back pain completely resolved, and I was able to gain more mobility in my lumbar spine and sacrum. The prices are affordable, and the location is convenient and comfortably decorated. I highly recommend this clinic, and I can’t wait to book my next appointment there!

  • Steven Green with OPTIMAL HEALTH has provided excellent service and treatment for my Plantar Fasciitis. Steven took time to provide a great overview of my condition before starting treatment. The first treatment provided immediately relief. I appreciate Steven's knowledge of muscular therapy and his professionalism. Steven Green is my preferred professional for treating muscular issues…

  • Mr. Green has done an excellent job addressing some chronic pain I have experienced the past six months. He takes time to assess the situation and explain his treatment recommendations in a manner that is easy to understand. He takes great care of his client's well-being, from assessment, to application of treatment, and follow-up. I am very happy that I experienced my first pain-free day in many months after a treatment. Thank you!

  • Steven Green is without a doubt the most professional bodyworker I have met in a long time. Not only is he a great bodyworker, but also a great communicator. His understanding of the body surpasses many many therapists out there and his ability to alleviate chronic soft tissue pain is at the top of his field.

  • To all who are experiencing muscle pain(s)… For years, I have fought muscle pain, both in my shoulder and hip. After having four knee surgeries, walking always placed pressure on my hip, leading to my hip pain. Having a broken collarbone led to my shoulder pain. I heard Steven talk about "MyoBalancing", and how it could relieve muscle pain. So I went for a treatment, to try it. It was as if my muscle was "knotted" at the hip joint and the treatment relaxed the muscle, allowing the leg to move freely. I was so pleased, that I could not wait to schedule an appointment for my shoulder. Again, I could not believe the results. My shoulder now has a more relaxed range of motion, without pain. It has been several weeks and I feel it is time to return for a "touch-up" appointment. Until my muscles learn to stay "stretched”, I will periodically need a treatment. The results are phenomenal. I highly recommend trying MYOBALANCING.

  • From the moment I got on the table, (and Steven's thoughtfully selected playlist began playing) the treatment became almost like a meditation. Steven's technique is like nothing I have experienced before. Part Rolfer and part psychic surgeon; he goes deep to get to muscles that are overlooked in a typical massage. Using all parts of his body, fingers, elbows and even feet, Steven uses constant, gentle pressure to unlock knotted muscles. However, no matter what part of his body he is using, he is always in tune with the client. It is almost as if he is feeling what you are feeling, even the pain. It takes a unique person to do this kind of work; it is intimate, healing, and sacred even. It is not your typical treatment and it probably will not appeal to everyone. However, if any of this sounds intriguing, you need to call Steven.

  • Through all of my Doctor, Physical Therapy, and Chiropractic Care visits, no matter what I tried I was unable to find relief. After tons of research and blood test results, I discovered that I had an autoimmune disease. Not desiring to be on medication for the entirety of my life, I thought a long-term treatment option would be best for me. Therefore, I reached out to MyoBalancing again. To my surprise, Steven was beyond helpful and spent uncompensated time doing his own research to help me determine what would be the best plan of action. After meeting to discuss a treatment plan, I felt confident that we were on the right track and within a couple months of biweekly sessions of bodywork and functional exercises, I could tell that my body was reacting positively. I knew my issues were a "special case", but Steven did not back down from the challenges we faced. He truly helped me find an answer to my pain and I am sure that he can help you as well!
